Spiritual Questions and Answers with Radhanath Swami

What did you find in Srila Prabhupada, that led you to be a disciple of his?

By on June 2, 2016 in Life with 51 Comments

srila prabhupadaQuestion to Radhanath Swami: Speaking of Gurus, yours was Srila Prabhupada, who started the Hare Krishna Movement. What characteristics did you find in him when you met him that led you to be a disciple of his, after having met many holy people on your journey?

Radhanath Swami Answers: I did meet many people who really inspired me, but I kept searching.

And in Vrindavan, the concept of Bhakti and the concept of Krishna – Radha, the male and female aspect of the one Supreme all beautiful loving God, really captured my heart. So I actually became a devotee living in Vrindavan.

And about six months later Srila Prabhupada came there, and I saw how he so authentically represented, through his words and through his life, this very beautiful ancient tradition I had given my heart to. And his words, although in very simple language, resolved so many confusions and apparent contradictions that were in my mind on so many subjects.

And most of all, it was his compassion, his very deep and profound concern and care for the body, mind and especially the souls of others that really moved my heart to want to dedicate my life to assisting in his mission, a mission of just trying to wake up the souls in others to understand this universal principle beyond sectarian or egoistic conceptions of God, religion or God itself.

Srila Prabhupada ki jay. Nice answer. Thank you very much.

We posted this Q&A from an interview Radhanath Swami Maharaj gave on spiritmatterstalk.com . One of the best interviews of Maharaj. One of the persons interviewing is Philip Goldberg, author of American Veda. I strongly recommend people to visit the site and hear this interview. If you have difficulty finding it, please let me know.

The talk after the interview is especially wonderful. The interviewers share their views about the Hare Krishna movement. By hears them speak, we can get a glimpse of how Radhanath Swami is influencing the American society. It is awesome.

    • Piyush Singh

This is simply wonderful. Thank you for sharing the background and the site. Very helpful.

Radio interviews are quite popular in the west. You can find quite a few radio interviews of Maharaj on the net. Only issue with them is they don’t allow you to give lengthy answers.

One of our Brahmacharis was invited for recording a radio interview in Mumbai. When the recorded stuff was broadcast on FM, they compressed the audio file, so that the brahmachari seems to be talking faster than his normal pace.

All these needs to be done because attention span is reducing in kaliyuga…

        • Piyush Singh

I see. I can kind of understand what you mean here. The radio stations have their own priorities in terms of when and how much to broadcast. And somehow presenting the deep philosophical points may not be high on their priority list.

I hope the voice of the brahmachari speaking faster was not too funny with increased speed.

Thank you very much for sharing this interesting information.

          • Gopinath Chandra

No it wasn’t funny. They have a way of doing it without distorting the speech.

          • Piyush Singh

Glad to know that :). Thank you.

          • Anand Patil

I listened to the entire radio interview. The way HH Radhanath Swami Maharaj answers the questions with simplicity is amazing. I was also zapped by the amount of knowledge of the interviewers – especially Phil. He talked about sadhana, karma, jnana etc and asked very intelligent questions. I am grateful to you for sharing the nectar.

          • Piyush Singh

Yes, HH Radhanath Swami answers all the questions with perfection.

At times I really think that it is not an easy task to take interviews because if you miss to do enough homework with the questions to be asked the interview may end up a flop show.

          • Anand Patil

Thanks pr for sharing the website and interview. I will listen it today.

          • Gopinath Chandra

Yes please listen. It is one of the best interviews of Radhanath Swami in recent times.

Even the questions were very relevant ones.

        • Sumit Sharma

          Sad to hear that prabhuji.

    • Raja Shekar

I heard this interview. Thank you Gopinath Chandra Prabhu. Particularly, the last message of Radhanath Swami that Krishna loves every one, with an amazing incident is really heart touching.

      • Gopinath Chandra

The beauty lies in the way Maharaj makes the philosophy universal without compromising on the essence.

He gives hope, a commodity badly required in the world. And the most important thing is he gives real hope, not false hope in the promises of Maya.

        • Raja Shekar

Yes, Maharaj’s words are always great hope giving. Actually I want continue the discussion on this very essential part of Krishna loves everyone. When we deeply meditate on this point, is that not sufficient to treat everyone with love and compassion? Because, no matter what they are, whether, rich or poor, black or white, beautiful or ugly, slum dweller or 5-star hotel owner, scholar or a drop out, etc., Krishna loves each one of them. So that should become priority in our life too, to love every living entity.

          • Gopinath Chandra

That’s why the more we become Krishna conscious,, the more we naturally and spontaneously love every living being.

          • Piyush Singh

Such beautiful point. Realizing the connection between Krishna and everyone else should certainly help in loving everyone.

          • Piyush Singh

So well pointed. Setting the right priorities in life leads to the ultimate goal.

    • Sumit Sharma

Amazing to see this!!! Thank you very much sir for sharing it with us.

  • Piyush Singh

HH Radhanath Swami so nicely summarized the wonderful qualities of Srila Prabhupada due to which so many sincere seeking souls could really surrender their lives in the mission of Srila Prabhupada. These tips are very useful for anyone to conclude this important search of one’s guru.

    • Gopinath Chandra

I am remembering a talk by Bhakti Charu Maharaj. He was explaining how King Prataprudra accepted Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu as the Supreme Personality of Godhead.

Even after Sarvabhauma Bhattacharya told him of Lord Chaitanya’s identity, King Prataprudra had some doubts. But when he heard about Chaitanya Mahaprabhu’s embracing the leaper Vasudev, he was convinced that only God could exhibit that level of compassion. Again, it was compassion, not any miracle, that convinced Prataprudra.

      • Piyush Singh

Certainly, to embrace a diseased person is not possible for any ordinary person living at the level of physical body. To do so, one should be able to see the goodness in everyone irrespective of their physical appearance and diseases. So, King made a wise conclusion based on this observation.

Thank you very much for sharing this point.

        • Sumit Sharma

Great point here Piyush! A real saint’s nature is like this. One who is at the level of soul can only act like this.

      • NSP

Thanks for sharing this wonderful pastime! I remember HH Radhanath Swami Maharaj stating that love for God is manifested as compassion to other living entities!

  • Kalpana Kulkarni

Very nice reply by Radhanath Swami highlighting the qualities of Srila Prabhupad. Srila Prabhupad walked his talk. I have read in his book that when he went to the US, some of the Americans used to attend his lectures. Due to his heavy Bengali accent, they could not understand what he spoke, but could only understand the language of the heart – his love and compassion for them. That’s what influenced and transformed the hearts of millions across the globe. We are so fortunate that Radhanath Swami dedicated his life to Srila Prabhupad’s mission and we have the good opportunity to have his association.

    • Piyush Singh

So true. The point about the language of the heart is really touching. Srila Prabhupada really transformed the hearts of so many people by just his sincere love and genuine care for everyone.

      • Sumit Sharma

Srila Prabhupad through his compassion created a revolution where lowest of the people got the highest position of preaching the devotional yoga ie. Bhakti yoga. Someone asked him how they are able to get this mercy because it requires some qualification, then in response to this, he said that he created the qualification of his disciples. Such a wonderful heart Srila Prabhupad had.

        • Piyush Singh

          This is truly amazing.

It is just like if someone comes to you for asking alms without a begging bowl then he is given begging bowl also free with the alms. Really interesting.

    • sumit

So truly said Prabhupad walked his talked… I recently read in the new Book by Radhanath swami “The Journey within” that when Prabhupad was in final days with in his physical form, his body was emaciated, only skin and bone left. Still he was translating the sanskrit text. When one of his student, a scientist came and was distressed to see the condition of Prabhupad , Prabhupad smiled and said ” You are a scientist and your method requires proof. I have been teaching all my life that you are not this body and now I am proving it. My body is practically gone but I am still the same.” The student reminded that a great teacher brings his words to life through his example.

      • Sumit Sharma

Great point Sumitji! A true sadhu (saint) always shows by his own example how to build character in one’s life. It is very heart touching to see how a great spiritual teacher Srila Prabhupad really showed it through his own example.

  • vidya karekar

Thanks HH Radhanath Swami for sharing wonderful qualities of Srila Prabhupada! A pure soul through his compassion can bring about a change of heart in so many people!

    • Sumit Sharma

Yes very true! It is just because of the compassionate nature of these great souls that we are getting benefited to proceed in our spiritual paths.

      • NSP

Indeed, we get all strength to carry-on on this path due to compassionate nature of great souls like Prabhupada and saints in his disciplic succession!

  • Sumit Sharma

We always hear from Radhanath Swami about being serious, sincere and without ulterior motives if we want to make progress in spiritual life. Here in this answer, we can see how sincerely he has dedicated his whole life for taking Srila Prabhupad’s mission forward. These are the symptoms of a pure devotee and disciple. If we really want to get our spiritual inquiries answered from authentic person, we should approach saints like him who are untiringly working for the real welfare of the society and the whole world.

    • Piyush Singh

Agree Sumit, saints like HH Radhanath Swami are our hopes to continue to get spiritual guidance.

  • Sumit Sharma

In one lecture, Radhanath Swami said something like “If you don’t have any purpose in your life for which you would like to die for, then you don’t have any reason to live for”. And he followed this statement very religiously while deciding upon surrendering to a spiritual master for which he can die for.

    • NSP

Nice observation! HH Radhanath Swami Maharaj is so much dedicated to the mission of Srila Prabhupada as well!

    • Piyush Singh

Really remarkable statement and he has shown by his own example for everyone else to follow. Thank you for sharing.

  • Laxmikanth

yes indeed its very true what defines a sadhu is his compassion , a great saint having so much of compassion to all living beings can not keep himself ,he becomes restless by seeing the suffering of the souls, and he does his best to make everyone happy, thats what Srila Prabhupada did and the legacy is being continued from his disciples like Radhanath swami who experienced the compassion of Srila Prabhupada, and out of his compassion he is also attracting the many to become happy in their lives.

    • Piyush Singh

So true. Compassion on fallen souls is an innate quality of all the elevated souls and Srila Prabhupada and HH Radhanath Swami are real good examples for the same.

    • Sumit Sharma

Yes very true! Let’s take this legacy to more and more people who may not be knowing this esoteric fact. That is something we can do best for the whole world.

  • CS Sandeep S. Shinde

H.H. Radhanath Maharaj has nicely explained qualities of Srila Prabhupada.

    • Piyush Singh

      Yes, he really nicely explained.

  • Umesh

Very nice answer by Radhanath swami. Indeed the teachings of Srila Prabhupad are quite enlightening and they can certainly attract the heart of any genuine spiritual seeker.

    • Piyush Singh

Certainly. Srila Prabhupada’s teachings are so practical and straight forward that any genuine seeker will b e attracted.

    • Sumit Sharma

Yes if one is genuinely seeking the essence of Vedas, he/she would be fascinated by the writings and teachings of Srila Prabhupad!

  • Carl Farrel

Srila Prabhupada said, “I’ve not come to America to become an American. I’ll not compromise. I’ve come to America to give them the Absolute truth of Krishna bhakti.” He sat under a tree on the grass with the little drum that someone gave him and he would chant the Hare Krishna Mahamantra. And gradually people gathered around him to see what this Indian Holy Man was doing. And he would induce them to raise their arms, and dance and loudly cry out the Holy names of Krishna.

    • Sumit Sharma

What a vivid explanation Mr. Carl! Nobody knew that this historical event would be transforming the world and people’s hearts upto such an extent that Lord’s Holynames would be chanted all over the world fulfilling prophecy of Lord Shri Chatainya Maharaprabhu Who once said in one of His pastimes that “One day My name would be chanted in every town and village in the whole world” and Srila Prabhupad was the personality who made it real by his dedicated hard-work.
