Question to Radhanath Swami: In many other traditions – Christian and Buddhist traditions – there is chanting of a devotional nature. Through those chanting can one expect to gain similar results as gained through the chanting of the Mahamantra?
Radhanath Swami Answers: The power of transcendental sound has been accessed by various traditions, throughout history and throughout the world.
Question to Radhanath Swami: When we chant, with what consciousness should we chant? What thing should we keep in mind while calling the Lord?
Answer by Radhanath Swami: Like a child crying for its mother we should chant the names of Krishna. We should take the shelter of Krishna who has so mercifully appeared within the name.
Question to Radhanath Swami: In earlier eons, it is said, people were very pious; but in this age, despite much impiety, why God incarnates very mercifully as his holy names?
Answer by Radhanath Swami: People in this age have such inclination to quarrel, to fight, to be hypocritical; their attention span is so less. For this very reason, God has arranged that the same result one could get in earlier ages by spending ones entire life sitting in a secluded place, in focus, in total meditation, can be achieved simply by chanting Krishna’s names in this age.
Question to Radhanath Swami: How can we get rid of reactions to the selfish activities committed in this life and previous life?
Radhanath Swami Answers: This just requires you to have faith in Krishna. In order to purify yourself, not only from the reactions but also from all inclinations to continue these selfish activities, you should chant the holy names of God. Some selfish activities have already born fruit in the form of suffering which you are experiencing at the present movement….
Question to Radhanath Swami: Chanting and hearing are the basic principles in Bhakti Yoga. What is the logic behind this principle?
Radhanath Swami: Anyone who is practicing Bhakti or Devotional service is the most fortunate on earth. If you are blessed with the seed of devotion, you must carefully take care of it. It is like a flower plant which should be watered regularly. The watering process for Bhakti is to water it with the sound vibrations of the glories of the lord produced by chanting….
Question to Radhanath Swami: Since we give a lot of time to chant Hare Krishna, to read Bhagavad Gita, and to visit temple on festivals, we see that we are not doing justice to our studies or to our profession. So, how to resolve this conflict?
Radhanath Swami: The function of the intelligence is to discern as to what is the best way to balance our life in a way that we are doing the optimum service to the Supreme Lord.
